“Principles of Yacht Design” by L Larsson and R E Eliasson, Third Edition, Mc Graw Hill, 2007

“Aero-Hydrodynamics and the performance of Sailing Yachts” by F Fossati, Adlard Coles Nautical, 2009.

HullForm Professional, Version 9, Yacht Design Program for Windows, Blue Peter Marine Systems, Australia, available free from www.hullform.com.

Delft Ship. This is another ship and yacht design program for Windows, available for free download from www.delftship.net

MathCad 15 Engineering and Maths program for Windows from PTC (Parametric Technology Corporation).

Excel spreadsheet from Microsoft as a less good alternative to MathCad.

A Velocity Prediction Program (VPP), possibly available commercially, but I wrote my own using MathCad.

For, optionally, calculating the flow round a yacht hull with velocities and pressures at all points to give the forces and moments, the simplest CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) approach is probably “A practical computer method for solving ship-wave problems” by C W Dawson, David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Maryland, USA. This gives the equations with a linearised free-surface condition and method of solution but you will still have to write a complex program using a programming language like Delphi, C or similar. Commercial programs like Splash and Shipflow are available but only at Americas Cup prices.

Chesapeake Bay Yacht Symposijum proceedings for state of the art papers on yacht aero and hydrodynamics.

Footy Class Rules, available on http://footy.rcsailing.net/footyrules_2009.pdf
